Several Heathens here in the Triangle make Heathen arts and crafts both as amateurs and as professionals. This page is a place for us to showcase our craftspeople's work as well as to provide further contact information for those who may wish to acquire some of our artwork for themselves.

Dan is an artist with skill in many areas, but he recently has been focusing his artistic energies on making tafl sets. If you are interested in commissioning a set from him you may contact him at vidholf[at]gmail[dot]com. |
This is a tafl set I made for myself, on a 12x12 inch plaque. The top is a 7x7 board, and the reverse a 9x9. I have enough men to play either side, but made the 9x9 side with a set of Runes in mind, as shown in the picture. I'd thought about playing "runic tafl" since noticing that a 9x9 board uses 24 men plus the king. |
Here is the back side of the same board shown above, with runes for the 24 men as described. |
This the first tafl set I made after much trial and error and error and trial and... I did it with a Bronze Age rock art theme, as I'm quite fond of the carvings from southern Scandinavia. |
I made this set mostly to have a 9x9 board after making the 7x7 'Bronze Age' set. This one has a Viking theme, with an inscription in Younger Futhark runes that quotes from the Voluspa - specifically the first line each of stropes 7 and 8, which talk about the gods meeting on the Idha plain and playing at tables. |
| Ana also does all sorts of handicrafts, but thinks people would most likely be interested in seeing her faux stained glass and wood burning. If you are interested in purchasing stained glass you may visit her Glass Gallery. |
When I first started making glass designs for other people one of the most obvious things was that I should make a Thor's Hammer. I spent quite some time trying to come up with a pattern that I liked and thought would work on the medium. I finally settled on this design which is based on the backside of a hammer that was found in Sweden. The background pattern is made entirely of lightning-shaped sowilo runes, so it seems very energetic to me. |
Listening to Ralph Vaughan-Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis brought to my mind images of the renewal of Heathenry after its long slumber, and so I was inspired to make this design showing Idunna tending her apples of youth which bring immortality to the gods. |
This piece gave me the opportunity to experiment with different patterns to evoke different impressions: the curves on the hill contrasted with the shattered appearance near the lightning bolt, for example. |
Personally, I like art even better if it's useful for purposes besides just looking at it. I needed a utensil holder, so I bought a plain bamboo one at the store and ended up with this. The text says, "May Frigga bless my home, my kitchen, and my cooking." |
All local Heathens are invited to submit to the webmaster images of up to five of their favorite works for inclusion on this page. Please include a brief description of each piece, and if you have your own website please include a link to it.
